can't move images back into user gallery

When I select batch add files...  this is ALL I see....

"Select the directory where you have uploaded your files"

NOTHING else - All I wanted to do was to to change the category of a uSer gallery image AND I GOT LOST!

Somehow the image moved out of the user gallery, and I can find no way to put it back in theuser gallery,

from the documentation:

Important: do not create folders or upload to the userpics- nor the edit-folder by ftp: these folders are used by coppermine internally and mustn't be used for any other purpose!

you should really read the documentation before asking questions: it's mandatory that you have uploaded something by FTP before being able to use batch-add. In fact, you were requesting help for a feature that you didn't even know what it's good for .

We have a "one question per thread policy" on this forum (you agreed to respect it when you signed up for your account), so your follow-up question is totally off-topic and should have gone into a separate thread. Short answer: a film strip (which is part of coppermine's code) can't show up on SMF pages (as smf and coppermine are different apps even when bridged). You would have to modify SMF's code to accomplish what you're up to. You might want to take a look into the cpmFetch mod: there's a whole sub-board dedicated to this mod: http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?board=57.0
