when i click 'batch add files' there in no directory from which to select files

in admin>config when i click 'batch add files' i go to the page that says:

Select directory
This function allows you to add a batch of file that your have uploaded to your server by FTP.

Select the directory where you have uploaded your files

however there is nothing below this text ie i dont have any directory to choose from. 

any ideas?
