Some Pictures I can't Upload

I have pictures about 800KB and when I try to upload other smaller ones about 100KB and they are fine.  The max size I can upload is 2048x2048.  The 800KB pictures are 1600x1200.  The error after trying to upload is:

The picture 'modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/10002/Picture 1306.jpg' can't be inserted in the album

The image you have uploaded is corrupted or can't be handled by the GD library

I am using GD 1.x and I do not have root access with my host.
Any suggestions????
