I can't watermark every image on my computer since I allow users to upload to the gallery, and I have read that watermarking on the fly uses lots of resources.  Is there a way to watermark the image permanently on upload to the gallery?

You might want to read the threads about watermarking.  A search for watermark will turn up a lot of posts, and you may even want to look at the mods/hacks board.
