intermediate image?

I am confuse about the final image which when clicked opens up a popup of the exact same sized image.  Am I missing something here?  Is there a way to have 3 different sized images... thumb, middle (which you click on) and a popup of a big one?

The third image should be bigger than the middle, or intermediate. CPG shouldn't create an intermediate if the size max is the same as the original. There is probably a difference but you can't tell. Try uploading an image that is much bigger than the setting.
