is there a way of sorting the users by one of the custom fields of the user profile  (It is possible that I did it before with version 1.2?, or is just a deja vu)

There's no support for cpg1.4.x yet, as clearly stated everywhere. Not a valid bug report. Marking as "invalid" and locking this thread.
