Thumbnail quality question

Today, I tried my dial-up connection (usually on broadband) and was surprized to see the thumbnails had degraded considerably. Not just Coppermine but other galleries too. Is this normal or can it be corrected?

I think I had the thumbnails too big. I made them smaller and it seems to be fine.
