I have no idea how to edit the CSS or php on the themes so I could get them to work my way. I can't even understand the steps on the tutorial on the forum to edit a theme. Does anyone happen to know of any links to a extremely detailed guide on php or to edit a theme?

Google for HTML, CSS, or PHP.  If you want to learn HTML, CSS, or PHP, I recommend visiting your public library and checking out a few books.  There is no substitute for reading when learning to code.
