Problems with adding files - strange error msg

When I have uploaded new pictures using FTP and want to add them to the apporpiate albums I get problems. Instead of accepting the new pictures with an OK icon, I get a little box with a red cross as the one shown below:

When I click on the icon I get an error message like

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 20971520 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 400 bytes)
in /hsphere/local/home/erritzoe/img.barenkopf.com/include/picmgmt.inc.php on line 223
I have checked available space in the site, and there is plenty. Also, I have verified that the permissions are all correct. I can't figure out what is wrong. ..
