parse error in coppermine.inc.php line 216

Hi!  I'm new to all this and had a question that someone who knew this progam quite well could possibly help me with.  I'm getting an error.  On the page, all it says is:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/fairytal/public_html/coppermine/bridge/coppermine.inc.php on line 216

I'm not quite sure what I can do to fix this, especially since there's nothing but spaces on line 216.

I'm not the most savvy tech peson, but I have a similar problem.  Here's what I did.   I used version 1.4.3 which I later found to be an unstable version sometimes.  I was getting 2 errors, 1- unexpected character input, and parse error like you're getting.

So I dowloaded 1.4.4, unzipped it on my local computer, renamed the folder to be uploaded, then used my FTP client in golive to send it to the server, then changed the permissions to 777 on the server admin site without using chmod, and now everything works !!!

I suggest trying to dowlonad version 1.4.4, and see if that helps, It made huge improvements and solutions for me.
