Hi Everyone,

I've been watching some of the logo designs on this board and while they are nice and colorfull to look at... they are very lacking as usable logos, in the real world of logos.

A good logo should be simplistic..easily regognized and usable in many sizes from large to small and from web graphics to print graphics. (The DevTeam may someday want to stick the logo on T-Shirts or hats or posters, not just the website).

Once they have a good base for the main logo, then the logo can be used in many ways with many colorful banners, buttons, fonts or slogan can be built around it.

So here is my idea for the logo following these logo guidelines. It's what I would call a Stage 1 logo, The concept is here and then from this we could then define what fonts to use and what slogon to use.

The camera in the logo is unique, I created in a vector program so it could be used at any size with-out loss of quailty in it's look.

I'm willing to grant it's use for the Coppermine logo if it's wanted.

Let me know what you guys think of it and if you would like to use it or not.

Logo Removed!
Good luck on the logo competion everyone. :)

Good valid points and arguments.  I also very much like what you have proposed above.  Too be honest, all the excellent logo's will cause a good heated discussion when trying to make a choice.  I really like the simplicity of your examples above.

Jeremy has a very, very excellent point.  (Jeremy, you must be from either a print background or a sign/banner background!)  Having come from an off-set printing background myself, I should have noticed this much earllier.

Let's think ahead and determine how much of a headache we want in the future.  Single color logos will be much more easily reproduced on myriad items.  Full color logos will be expensive everywhere EXCEPT the web (where color is cheap!  ;) )   Also, if we ever decide to do some type of a watermark feature, a single color logo will transfer into a watermark much more easily.

my two cent: I like the 3D-look of the text of sogeri's last addition, but will it work on smaller space (buttons)?

I'll have to start a contest with voting soon; the logo issue is increasing momentum... good.

I think we really need to be thinking ahead here.  Jeremy posted a very interesting (and experienced) post on logo design which I think we need to address.

I'll just check with icon's author again to make sure it's ok to use it, and I'll post it here.

That is an awesome logo.  By far the best so far, IMHO.  I think there is probably a better font out there for it, but the camera graphic is tops.  A (optional) tagline "web photo gallery" or somesuch is probably in order also.

Got any further pointers to logo design "guidelines"?  This is the kind of work I'd love to get into but my skills just aren't there yet.

Hi Joel,

Just remember to keep it simple in design. In this web age many people/businesses seem to want a "full-color-flash-animated-logo-to-kill-all-competion".

While this may look good on the web with a DSL or cable connection it's not going to work well in print or for those many dial-up internet users.

This doesn't mean you can't have fun with it... I usually start with something that works well on it's own and then build it up from there...(add flash/colors/etc)

Also logos created in a vector program...(such as Illustrator, Freehand, or Croel Draw) are more usuable then anything created in photoshop or some other image program. Vector allows for scaling of the logo with-out loss in quality or pixelating.

Hope this helps in some way  :)

Well, a generic logo for a generic default theme is fine. Quite like the simplicity so I think it will work. Could give it a little bezel look - I might give it a go.

Full color logo with pictures with all the magics should really be customised work. Each to their own.

Sogeri

There are some valid points in what Jeremy wrote but to claim copyright for the example is a bit overboard. After all isn't the Coppermine program FREE??

Then the question of the logo. 'Coppermine' is a word and not a logo. Would the camera then be the Coppermine 'logo'. If so, it is more than 'simplistic'. The word Coppermine can only become a logo if it is shown in a unique kind of type style, like 'Coca-Cola'. As long as it is written in a font that can be obtained anywhere it is not a logo.

Some things should be agreed upon in a 'logo competition', like the color scheme. It appears to me that the present colors used (blue & orange) are actually the colors of the phpBB. Are the two programs related? I think not.

The foregoing is only meant to stimulate discussion!

Zarsky

First of all logo's canNOT be copyrighted by a group or company, except the creator CAN copyright the "design" of the logo/text....logo's really should be trademarked. Secondly, logo's are not required to be trademarked. Trademarked logo's gather extra protection, but must be filed with the USPTO or some other government tradmark issuing body.  I do not think we will bother trademarking a logo that is selected.  (I could be wrong on that one)  FREE scripts do have COPYRIGHT under the GPL license.  Just because something is free does not mean there is no copyright.  The GPL license spells this out very clearly.

Some more samples with a bit of 'copper':

zarsky99 right!

Perhaps the Dev. Team could set out some parameters and make it clear that any logos submitted become 'property' of CPG.

Jeremy

In case it was unclear in my post, I didn't try to put a copyright on the word Coppermine or anything of the such.

The copyright I included with the image is there simply to stem off anyone trying to grab the camera graphic and use it as their own. "I, Jeremy Foster" created the camera graphic from scratch. It is mine -logo/graphic or whatever you want to call it. Just as much mine as anything I design or write is mine (websites, logos, graphics, photos, articles, etc...)

If the Coppermine group wants to use it as a logo, great, I'll be glad to give to them to do what ever they want with it, but if they don't, I have other plans for the graphic in my own projects, so therefore I don't want it ripped off.

  Frankly I thought it would help steer the logo designs into a more usable set of examples instead of this "phpBB banner" type logo stuff. Well whatever..go ahead make your logos and banners, I don't have time to scwable over minute things like this.

Keep up the good work on the script Dev.Team that's what's important (more then any of this logo stuff).

-Jeremy

Joachim Müller

this is what I understood as well from Jeremy's posting: he wanted to point out his graphics weren't just ripped somewhere else, but that the coppermine was allowed to use it as their logo.
I don't understand why the discussion on graphics is so heated - I like all submissions, but personally I'd prefer a simplicistic logo (as the one done by Jeremy).
@all: please keep on working on this, as the quality of all contributions even increases from posting to posting!
In the end, we'll let the users have a say and create a poll, but meanwhile I'd prefer to have less critics on the logo threads and more submissions!

GauGau

Sogeri

Gaugau, seems to me that there are a lot of good points being brought forward from all participants BUT unless we get some directions from the Dev. Team it's hard to come up with a good design.

I understand that you need logos in various sizes as posted by yourself. Just the word 'Coppermine' will look kind of lost on a 468 x 60 px banner and so some filler graphic is required.

Perhaps it would be an idea to develop a logo first that will that become part of banners and mini banners rather than the other way round.

Joachim Müller

I'll put this up for discussion with the dev team (I'm not a designer, so it's hard for me to set guidelines on artwork)...

This looks like the right path - a logo first, thus it should have
a Symbol + the word Coppermine OR CPG?

hmm, I'm not an graphics artist, so I don't know if this works when made smaller, but how about using a pic of an actual mine as logo (just food for thoughts)? A quick search on google returned:
