Did I install wrong?

According to the install instructions, it says to upload the extracted coppermine directory to your server.  Ex. http://yourdomain.com/coppermine

I uploaded the folder to my subdomain, http://gallery.mydomain.com/coppermine.  I then installed coppermine.  The only way I can access the gallery is if I goto gallery.mydomain.com/coppermine.

I want to access the gallery by just going to gallery.mydomain.com.  Do I have to put all of the files in the root directory?  If so, does this have any security risk?  Last, do I have to reinstall, or can I change the paths somehow?

Just move all the files up a level if that's where you want them. No security risk associated with that. Remember to change the site url in config once you make the change.
