www. log in problems

This is an odd thing. I had a problem that when I log in it says 'welcome -> continue' and then doesn't bring up any of the admin buttons. So seemingly not logged in.
I have now found that if I remove the www. prefex it will log in. I can't think of an answer
I saw a thread in this forum with a similar problem but it had no answer.
Any ideas?

This is a cookie issue:

http://test.com

http://www.test.com

Each URL is a different cookie (it's just the way the web works).  If you start at test.com and are redirected to www.test.com after you log in, you won't be logged in.
