do themes work as CPG is upgraded?

i want to play with one of the themes and customize it for my site. when coppermine is upgraded to a new version, again and again, will the doctored theme work as originally made?

ie: could i just keep a copy of "sixleggedinsect_theme" in the themes folder, and re-place it everytime i do the coppermine upgrade with no additional coding?

If you are upgrading within a major version such as from 1.4.9 to 1.4.10 then that is usually fine.
