I installed v1.40 and ran the upgrade script for 1.0 to 1.2 that was included, and got an error that said something like a 'date' field did not exist, and the upgrade stopped halfway.

Does anyone know the version of my source? It's here:

there is no versioncheck.php included, and I think it's v1.0, but the fact that the upgrade crashed indicates it might not be.

Go to coppermine's config page - the version should be displayed there.
If you can't find it there, open include/init.inc.php with a plain text editor - the version info should be in there as well.

You appear to be using cpg1.2.x or older.

Please re-read the ugrading guide - it tells you what you need to do to upgrade.
