how to add SSI in index/template?

I know the FAQ says you cant change the name of template.html to php and include SSI in it. But is there anyone who knows how to modify it to do so? I wan't to include my vbulletin navbits in the headers of the gallery so people can see the login box or their private msgs info when logged in. I already have this working outside of vb but since you can't rename template.html what other files could I include my code to use SSI so it shows up at the top of each gallery page?
