cannot recreate intermediate

I read a message here where someone deleted their intermediates to save space, did not like the effect, so recreated them. That's what I did and what I want to do, but nothing gets recreated! Of all the options available on the admin utility page I select one and only one radio button "Only resized pictures". I then selected the first album in the dropdown and clicked submit. I did the same for each album in turn. None of the intermediates show up. There's an image placeholder having the correct dimensions apparently, but a little red x is there, which means the file isn't found on the server. Please help. Thanks

Forget the problem. I figured it out.
