I've recently had a spate of spambot posts in my comments so I installed the capcha mod. This was great until some users started complaining they could not read it (you cannot please some people ::)).

Would it be possible for the post comments code to automatically reject any comment from an unregistered user if it contains a URL or an email addy. This would not block all spambots but would stop most.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Both the captcha mod as well as comment approval has been added to the devel branch (that will become cpg1.5.x once released). I don't think that a feature like the one you request will go into the core though, but you're of course welcome to hack the code as you see fit (i.e. come up with the mod your request and maybe even post it on the board).
