Need help customizing...

How do I make it so that the first page only shows each main category and not any sub-categories, i.e. only showing Competitions, Shows/Exhibitions, and Other Events? Then one can click on Competitions and see each next sub-category - 2006-2007 Season, 2005-2006 Season, and so on? Did that make sense?
