Unable to connect to database

Up and until last night my gallery was working properly.
But this morning the site experienced some down time and I just wanted to login to my gallery, to create some new folders when this error came up:

Coppermine critical error:
Unable to connect to database !

MySQL said: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I'm hoping this is easy to fix or something that will be over soon, cause I don't have a recent database back up and I obviously can't make one either.
Hope any of you can help me out here.
