not allowed to delete missing images

Hi,
I've been digging through FAQs, documentation, and forum posts trying to figure out how to deal with an error that it does seem people have had: Directory 'albums/userpics/10001/' is not writable, files can't be deleted  and have tried CHMODing the directory in question to both 775 and 777 with no effect on the error message I receive.

The album is installed and working at http://lindenhofbmds.com/coppermine/index.php but in the process of bulk uploading, it appears that some files were corrupted. I've re-uploaded those images and they display fine, but I have double-entries for which one doesn't have an image and the other does, so I've been trying to erase the ones without the image--and that's where I run into the error I outlined above.

OK... I have no idea why, but this issue has now resolved itself with no further action on my part...!?
