Default Image or URL Upload?

Hello:

I'm trying to modify CPG 1.2 so that I can have a default image on the 'Upload Image' page.  This image should be used if the user does not select an image to upload.  I know this sounds strange, but some users may not have a photo of the item that their 'post' represents.

I thought the easiest way to do this would be to have a default URL listed in the upload box.  Unfortunately, this feature is not available in v1.2.  I would like to avoid upgrading due to the many modifications that have been performed.

These are my ideas to solve the problem, but I would like to ask if anyone actually knows how ONE of these could be done:

- patch v1.2 to upload from URL
- bypass any 'require photo' settings
- automatically use default image if none is selected for upload
