problem installing CPG

I have tried to install coppermine and it fails:

I unziped the file, and put the coppermine directory that was created in /var/www
Until here, have I made any mistakes?

Then I pointed my browser at http://myserver/coppermine/install.php
and I completed the details at the page: admin username, password, mysql user, password, database name, etc.

I press submit and then... a blank page only with the coppermine logo on top... nothing more... No error messages no nothing. Please help!

I've heard of this odd behaviour before - I don't know if there's a fix. Please search the old board on this issue.
