Logon Problems after First install

I have just finished installing Coppermine v1.4x without any installation issues.
I have not got round to bridging at this stage.
When I go to login with the Administrator account for the first time, it accepts my username and password, says something like 'Welcome xusernamex'  and then returns to the normal screen showing 'login' not 'logout' and I have no access to the Admin console.
Any ideas?    This has been bugging me for days..

I have checked and the login.php file is there, please any help to get this up and running?
