Thumbnails

I am trying to work out how to stop thumbnails appearing with a distorted edge when the image is cropped with no space around it, I have tried so far to add a padding value to certain files but has not worked. I have attached an image of what I am talking about.

There is a line at the top of the image it is not there once the image is enlarged the thumbnail image does not seem to have the line either.
I use the gallery to display clipart.

Crop on the client, not the server. Server-sided cropping is a workaround.
