UTF-8, hebrew - fresh install

Hi,
I just installed a fresh cpg1.4 on my server. I am using UTF-8 (defaulted by cpg) and while I'm able to write in Hebrew without any problems,
when I try to view the database through phpmyadmin, the hebrew i wrote from within cpg gets shown as gibbrish. I also tried the other way around - changed the name of a gallery through phpmyadmin and recived gibbrished results in cpg.

What can cause this problem ? I'm guessing some settings are set differently between the two programs, but I need to know which.
I'm checking this as I'm worried that the hebrew is not being saved properly (aka utf-8) in the db and might mess future upgrade attempts.
