The answer should clearly be: depends on what you have on your server. If you have both, it's just a matter of taste. Disadvantage of GD: doesn't cope with very large pics. Disadvantage of IM: extremely resources-consuming during batch-add.
GD usually is easier for newbies as it already comes packaged with recent versions of php.
