Not sure about the non braking space - it might get removed by accident. I suggest to convert the files to genuine utf-8 to fix this permanently and to add a line to the header that contains a special char, together with the note that says not to edit that line.

I'm trying to look into this from my Linux box now, with a genuine editor that will never try to fallback to ANSI needlessly. Bluefish (my favorite editor on Gnome/Linux) says that all files inside the lang folder are actually utf-8 files (even english.php), so I'd say that this is something on the end of notepad++.

... actually utf-8 but Notepad++ found the BOM inside different files!

Notepad has two options:

UTF-8 (without BOM)

UTF-8 => has the BOM in the first three bytes

see example in attach.

I'm aware of that. Not an issue if a client plays by the rules.
