Replace Category Names with Icons ?

Is it possible to replace Category Names with custom Icons / Images so that after that the text name is gone and there is only a specific image ?

The probably easiest solution would be to create a plugin that uses the page_html hook to search the whole output for specific words. Instead of using 'real' category names you could use tokens like {CATEGORY_ID_42} and then search for that tokens and replace them.

I probably would but I have no ideas how to make plugins. So I take it there is nothing yet made for a purpose like that ?
