Is STYLE GUIDE a downloadbale theme? This would make for a great starting point for customization.

Styleguide belongs to the v1.3 distribution as additional theme.

But you mustn't modify style_guide itself, as it works differently than all other themes. It's only meant to illustrate what the css classes are for, not more, not less - refer to http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/themes/styleguide/readme.htm (comes with the package as well).
