I have a fresh install on a newly created Ubuntu 12.04 server that I manage myself. When uploading, I get a 500 error whether it is a single file or bulk upload. I am a bit of a noob and would appreciate any help I can get.

I forgot to add I created a user test_user with a password of Password123 for you to use when investigating this issue on tomsmess.com. The index page for the website will redirect you to the coppermine index.php

I just uploaded a file to your gallery successfully. Have you changed anything in the meantime?

I don't know what happened but now I get a Server (IO) Error...

here's the last few lines of debug:

Error Code: IO Error, File name: Mountain Pixies.jpg, Message: Error #2038

trashing the whole thing and trying a clean install from the start including OS

I assume you are self hosting? In these cases it is almost impossible for us to help as the errors are server related, not CPG related. There are so many ways a server can be setup it would require direct access to debug. At the very least with a 500 server error you need to know where your logs are and examine them to understand where the error is. As such there is probably ver little we can advise on.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
