I host my website on Yahoo.com

2.1 How to install the script
Unpack the archive preserving the directory structure

I did this

Upload all files onto your webserver (make sure to use the correct ftp mode)

I did this

CHMOD the folders albums and include to 755 (or 777, depending on your server config) - this step is really important, don't skip it!

I did this, but had no clue whether my server wanted 755 or 777.

Run the install script on your server (http://your_server/coppermine_dir/install.php) and follow the instructions

I don't know what the verb "run" means here.  When I typed the install.php file location into my web browser, I got a "you don't have permissions" error.

2.2 Getting started

Log in with the admin username and password you set up during install, click on the "admin mode" link if it is visible, go to the Config page and start to configure your gallery. Note that even if you are a member of the administrator group, you need to be in "admin mode" to configure your gallery.

Log in?  Where?  Is there an executable somewhere that starts a client utility?  Or do I go to a particular URL that gives me a login window?  What's the URL?  How do I switch to admin mode?

I've been running my website for a several years and I'm a computer technician, both hardware and software.  I've solved all kinds of problems with proprietary software and legacy systems, but I've never read "install instructions" that assumed the reader already knew the proprietary terms and big picture as much as these instructions do.  Part of the reason this forum is so huge and you guys are working so much to support the software is that the install instructions should be more comprehensive and instructional to a less trained user.  Right now, the average artist or photographer isn't going to use this utility because the barrier to entry is so high.

If you are getting a permissions error, it means you have not set the CHMOD correctly to allow you to run the script, all php files in the root coppermine directory need to be 777 or 755. If you have simply applied permissions changes to the folders, check to ensure the files within the folders have inherited those permissions correctly.

You cannot continue with the instructions unless you have ran the install.php.

not exactly true imo: you need read and execute permissions for all php files for the user the script runs under. Usually, write permissions are not necessary for the coppermine root folder, only for the albums and include folder.

Of course, but full permissions are a good place to start if you are having problems.
