once i uploaded pics by FTP, and afterwards placed them in a album... can i remove them from my site root? Are they then placed inside the database?

No, you keep them where you uploaded them to. Only file information, comments, etc are in the databse not the actual pics.

Any idea why my pics aren't send with a e-card?
1) one question per thread - you agreed to respect this policy when you signed up for your account on this board
2) without a link to your page, nobody could have an idea why your pics are not sent, great question... :( Maybe you should read the FAQ first, especially http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/faq.php#howtoask
