no need to re-install, just go to coppermine config and change "Method for resizing images" to GD2.

Version 1.3.2 and earlier cannot upload gif files when gd is used, even if it has been upgraded.  There has been plenty of posts on how to overcome that(with version 1.3.2, not 1.2x), and a mod posted as well I beleive.

Search for uploading gif files.

Version 1.4(currently in alpha testing) can upload gifs as normal when the server supports it.
