my first registered person seems to have admin status even though in their permissions it is set as registered.
He told me that he could click on the tab that switches between user and admin mode, is something wrong here?
That would be user admin mode. You can do the same on the demo (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/index.php).

so does that make them an admin? I don't wish to have any other admins.
Of course not, that would just be silly. It allows users to switch between a viewing mode and an album editting mode.
