Title: Slow response time... :(
Post by: matic on November 29, 2003, 11:27:17 PM
My gallery have VERY bad/slow response time.
I got own testing server with xinXP & IIS + PHP + mySQL + IamgeMagick ; Celeron1100 with 256MB ram and 100Mbit LAN.
I tried also some other galleries (Gallery, 4iamges,...) and they ain't so bad... Did anyone allready compared speed with other galleris?

Page is loading for a long time (from 2 to 10 sec!) - meanwhile page is white. Once page start's to load elements all runs fine. (That's happening on all pages!)

Is Coppermine a bit slower (in intitalization) or is just an my fault!?

You can try/see it on url: http://matic.streznik.org/gallery but my "outside" connection ain't fast - ADSL. I mostly use this server for my internal experiments - somekinda intranet.

From what I see, the speed seems to be OK.
Only the pictures seem to show up a bit slow, but that's probably coz I'm far away.

I have a huge coppermine installation runnning on a celeron 500 with 256 RAM, and it runs pretty fast too, so your hardware shouldn't be a problem.

Try the default theme, and see if it still runs slow.

I found 1.2.0 to be extremely slow too, until I uninstalled Norton Systemworks Pro 2004.  After that, response time was excellent.

I'm not sure which component was interfering but I'll try to figure it out.  If I do, I'll post a follow up.

what is Norton Systemworks Pro 2004 good for? Is it some personal firewall? Most internet security suites can be configured to trust certain sites (mostly cookie/privacy related).

SystemWorks is Symantec's suite of products, none of which are related to firewalls. It includes:

- Norton Antivirus: Self explanitory

- Norton Utilities: Disk scan, system info, etc.

- Norton Password Manager: New program to store personal info, credit cards, etc. Also helps you to fill in web forms with your own personal info rather than typing it each time

- Go Back: Restore your PC to a state it was previously in case of a crash

- CleanSweep: Uninstall apps and other unneeded files

- Norton Ghost: (Pro Only) Emergency disk backup (creates full image of disk rather than file by file, including partitions)

---------------

With all that being said, I typically upgrade each year to get continued anti-virus protection and for Ghost, which I like to use in order to fully backup my drive to a secondary drive.

I use Norton Utilities once in a while and have never installed CleanSweep or Go Back until this version. I thought I'd give them a try.   But as I said, something was seriously interfering with the speed of access to Coppermine.  Once fully uninstalled, the speed returned.  I may install one component of SystemWorks at a time to see which item is causing the slowdown.

Since the Norton products are quite popular with PC users, I thought that this information would be useful, especially when they're seeing such poor performance from Coppermine.

That's what I heard from a lot of people: Norton products tend to over-protect your pc, slowing it considerably down (untill a complete freeze). I use Norton Ghost at my Job (DOS-Bootdisk-version), which is fine for me to create hard disk images, but I wouldn't trust the rest of Norton's products any further than I could spit a rat.
Try some real virus scanners (I prefer TrendMicro's OfficeScan)...
