Why do I get this error?

"Couldn't get mail server response codes "

did you read the docs, particularly http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg13x/docs/index.htm#smtp ?

I supplied hostname, a username and a password and it worked a couple of times then stopped.

Are you able to send mail using that host name, u/p combo when using your usual email client?
