I have an older version working on another clients site. Used fantistico to install. Tried imagemagick & gd.

Already read that, tried ftp, etc. Does the debug text say anything about what the problem could be?
I checked permissions too, all 777
You can't use imagemagick if exec() is disabled on the server. Switch to GD2 and do as suggested in the documentation.
