You can't use 1.3 themes with a 1.4 gallery unless you update them following the instructions provided in the docs.

Ok so i'm following the theme upgrading thing (http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/theme/edit_style.html) and for the style.css it tells me i need to validate

mine doesn't work either after following the instructions posted here.
i'm using an anime theme. i wish that there's an updated anime theme working on 1.4x...
copy themes/classic/theme.php into themes/yourcustomtheme/ (remember to backup the original file first) and see if this fixes your issues.
