Does your server use GD. If so, you may have it set for GD1, when it uses GD2.

Try changing it in config. You will have to use the re-size utility to change the existing thumbs.

This looks as you have not defined the correct GD-version in settings.

if you change to the proper GD version, keep in mind that this won't affect the tumbs already created - use the "resize pictures" utility when in admin mode to re-create the thumbs based on your current config.
