Is there a way to set a width to the table that is displayed under groups in the admn

Is your actual issue that the table is to wide for you when viewing the groups page on a smaller resolution? Setting the width of this table to something smaller won't help, as the content is too wide. Attach a screenshot of your groups page to your posting (using "additional options" when composing your message) and post a link to your coppermine page.

this is what the groups page looks like now and it is to wide to fit in my template

you can't make it fit with just adjusting the table width. It's made to fit on a page without side menu. Either try to make all the table cells smaller or ignore that. Your users shouldn't be able to see the group control panel anyway
