I have an image that would fit into two album categories. Is there any way to add the image to both, rather than uploading it twice?

Yes, using album keywords. Please refer to the documentation.

Thanks for the pointer: I upgraded my albums from 1.3.x to 1.4.x and hadn't noticed that change. Works fine retrospectively by adding album keywords and then adding keywords to images already in other albums.
