I've tried it 5 times now and I keep getting the same problem.
Since my picture gallery is about 1,2GB for savekeeping I first reinstalled 1.3.3 again in a new directory and ran a backup.
Then I got 2 perfectly running versions of CPG 1.3.3
I saved anycontent.php and config.php on my HD and then I saved all the CPG 1.4.4 files except the albums dir over the existing CPG 1.3.3 dirs.
I put anycontent.php and config.php back in the new dir and finally ran update.php.
I remembered manually having updated a 1.3.4 originally installed by Fantastico and that took some time, now very fast is says almost on every line "already done" and in PHPMyAdmin you can see that de dbase still only has 13 lines of CPG133 instead of 20 CPG140
I hope anyone can help me out cause it seems I'm overlooking 1 simple thing.

You need to replace the contents of the sql folder because it's showing code from 1.3.3. http://www.kuikens.com/pictures/sql/update.sql
Make sure all files in subfolders were overwritten. It still says 1.3.3 when I looked at the index file's source.

Thanks for the very fast answer.
It looks like my FTP program simply skipped some directories while overwriting.
Everything seems to be working fine now.
