Title: zipdownload.php/pictures.zip fails to decompress on the mac
Post by: SpeakToMeNow on May 03, 2006, 10:24:31 AM
Hi I'm running 1.4.5 cpg with no problems, its all working well, but on the mac when trying to download the pictures.zip file from zipdownload.php mac users get "Decompression Failed" error in Safari.

When using something like stuffit to decompress the file it seems to work OK.

Any mac/Safari users who can advise on what this might be?

Has anyone else encountered this?

Cheers.

do you save the file or are you trying to open it directly? What decompression app is tied to zips on OS level?

Either saving the file, or by just letting Safari attempt to decompress on-the-fly.

The default for opening zip files that comes as part of OSX is BOMArchiveHelper. So whenever you zip/unzip at the "Finder" level in OSX this is what gets used.

Is there something about the method cpg uses to zip them up that causes this?

Are there any other options for zipping on the fly at the server level?

Cheers.

hm, not sure. I think I have heard about this before, afaik this is related to safari. Could you test with another browser on Mac OS, e.g. Firefox?

hmmm. Firefox offers very different behaviour. It prompts to open with an app and shows the option as "Stuffit Expander (default)" or "Save to disk".

The result is that it works fine in the latest FireFox on OSX.

This doesn't seem to use OSX built in zipper app like Safari, so it does seem to be speficic to Safari.

I could add something to the FAQ array in english.php I guess.

Maybe there's a way to include this message on the actual Favorites page?

Thanks.

don't get me wrong, but the acronym "FAQ" comes from "frequently asked questions". This is actually an issue that doesn't actually happen frequently, but rather rarely, or nearly never at all. It won't go into our FAQ, but you're of course welcome to come up with a custom solution on your page that explains this to Safari users.

Yeah that's what I meant - wasn't suggesting it go into the distro version!
;D
