Title: Install no-go on Hostexcellence Win account
Post by: ChipMoody on February 28, 2007, 06:51:39 PM
Okay, so I believe that I've installed all the Coppermine files properly.  Near as I can tell permissions are okay - if there's a tool provided by my host (hostexcellence) that lets me tweak them, I can't find it.

So after filling out all the fields on the install form and clicking "Let's Go!", a page loads up after a minute that has the Coppermine logo at the top of the screen and nothing else.

If I wait a few moments and try to go to admin.php and log in, I get told "Couldn't log in - try again".

I believe everything related to SQL is correct.

  Help?

  TIA,
     - Chip

What version are you attempting to install? That 'only the logo' problem should have been fixed long ago.

I'm trying to put in 1.4.10.  Hope that's the most current - I thought it was!  :)

  Thanks,

Error message:

Unable to connect to database !

MySQL said: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)
Contact your webhost.

Based on that error message?  If I can't get the software to install in the first place, wouldn't I expect to see an error like that?  And what would I be telling/asking my webhost?  ("Hi, I can't install Coppermine on your webserver - they didn't say why, but they said I should call you...")

FWIW, the installer does make a number of CPG1410_ (or similar) entries into my SQL database.  And during my first attempt at installation when I mis-typed the SQL database username, I did get an error message.

  Thanks,

Also - when prompted for the SQL server address during the install, I provided the address of the server - I didn't leave it as "localhost".  Am I mis-reading the message?

  Thanks,

edit include/config.inc.php with a plain text editor: is the mySQL access data there correct? If yes, then do as I suggested and ask your webhost. If no, change it as you see fit and save your changes.

That helped make an improvement, thanks GauGau.

The only field populated in that file was the table prefix - the rest were empty.  (Well, the SQL address said 'localhost', again NOT the address I entered into the install form)  Once I manually populated those and copied the file back to the server, I can now see the default main page.

  BUT...

It won't let me log in with the username/password I provided during the install, so I can't make any changes.

Assuming you have a manual adjustment I can make to let me get logged in, should I worry about anything else that the installer may not have taken care of?

  Many thanks,

Okay.  An hour ago I knew NOTHING about SQL except that it was some kind of database.

After finding my host's MySQL interface and poking around the tables a bit, and doing a google search on "SQL add record command", I was able to manually add an admin user and Administrators group the database.  (There were no users nor any groups specified when I first started looking into the database)

I can now log in through the Coppermine interface, and it looks like I can get my site's gallery up & running at this point without having to do anymore behind the scenes voodoo.  (Picture me crossing my fingers here)

I still don't know why the installation script didn't do it's thing, and while I'm curious to find out, I'm more interested in knowing if there is anything else I should be checking that it may have missed.

Thanks again for all the help.  Beyond any other insights you can share, I think you can tag this thread as closed/solved.

  Update

And I'm putting this here in case anyone else does a fourm search on HOSTEXCELENCE and PERMISSIONS.

I was still having problems today getting CPG up and running - couldn't upload pictures, a variety of configuration settings wouldn't "stick", etc.  (Like, I could select a different theme, save changes, and nothing would chage - revisiting the setting pages showed that the default theme was still selected)

Turns out with a H.E. "Windows" based account, the only way you can get folder write permissions set is by opening a tech support ticket and requesting that they bless the appropriate directories.  (/include and /albums in this case)

Once I got confirmation that this was done, I went back into the MySQL, deleted all the CPG tables and re-ran the install script.

This time it ran and came back with a confirmation.  After that, everything seems to be working perfectly.

Thanks for returning and resolving your thread.

No prob...  I did a search on Hostexcellence when I first got here, and the one or two matches I came across didn't mention anything about this.  So while I'm embarassed that maybe I should have investigated the permissions issue sooner in the process, I also wanted to make sure that it would be easy for the next person having this problem to find a concise answer.

The gallery is working great, BTW.  The girlfriend of the guitarist in my band gave me a CD's worth of pictures she had been accumulating to post this past weekend.  If anyone cares about pictures of a central New Jersey cover band, head on over to www.generalskrank.com...

  Thanks again,
