To be honest, the main problem with Coppermine is the totally non-friendly SEO url crafting. Even with the mod_rewrite you can't make really good URLs for Coppermine.
We all know the ideal URLs are something like:
www.some-gallery.com/cpg_folder/category-name_album-name_picture-name.html
while the best you can do right now with Coppermine, after applying mod_rewrite is:
www.some-gallery.com/cpg_folder/displayimage-8-3.html and this one is the duplicate (SEO killing) of the www.some-gallery.com/cpg_folder/displayimage-ID.html
Also, when dealing with more then 30.000 views/day, CPG really puts fire on the CPU no matter what php and mysql tuning you make. The CACHE MOD should be a must have in the next versions.
The point is that, right now Coppermine is close to the most unSEO galleries and this is a pity because under the hood there is some neat code and a lot of work.
This post is made after testing for more then 2 years the CPG on production heavy loaded websites.
Both features already requested and acknowledged as nice to have. Rewriting the url system in a way that allows Coppermine to work both with and without url rewriting (for servers not supporting it) is not an easy task.
Coppermine can handle high traffic, you just need to sacrifice a few features.

This is not a support thread, see "NO SUPPORT in FEATURE REQUESTS (http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=15866.0)"
As for the cache mod requests, you are not alone. Read this thread: http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=46381.0
