Title: how to look up user by ip address?
Post by: Singular on August 08, 2007, 05:26:13 PM
Hello all,
I have an ip address that keeps rating everyone's images as a "1". I can ban him, but want to know which user it is. Also, just in case it happens again, I would like to be able to look up the user. Is there a way to look up the user by ip address?

thanks,
Joe

Is there a way to delete all votes made by a specific ip address? I would much rather do that than to reset all of the votes for the entire album.

all the best,
Joe

Check if the IP is a bot first (using whois). You can check the IP associated with comments or picture uploads using the database.

Not integrated into the coppermine user interface, no. Merged the two threads you started about the very same issue.

That message says you need to lookup the IP in ripe - http://www.ripe.net/whois. That means it's probably a european IP.

I've banned RIPE Network Coordination Centre bots.

You'll lose many (thousands) legitimate visitors if you're banning that IP range. Keep in mind that RIPE is a legitimate organisation, not a bunch of botnet jerks. They just provide the lookup feature for you.
For others who have similar issues: it doesn't make sense to ban by IP. If you're concerned about spammers ruining your gallery (posting ads in comments), consider disabling interactive features like rating for guests. Alternatively, use CAPTCHAs.
