Title: GD problems with coppermine
Post by: kittenbot on March 21, 2004, 02:10:26 AM
Well I won't profess to be a smart man and I'll just admit I'm a moron, I seem to have a problem with GD as my auto-thumbnailer, it won't allow GIFs, I would switch to image magick but I'll admit I have no clue about how to instrall it, is there a way to completely switch off auto thumbnailing?

edit: I've found that imagemagick also doens't do GIFs because of the GIF patents...damn, wish I could solve this without waiting till july 7th for the patent to die and then a bit longer till a new versyion of GD comes out...

there is (limited) support for GIF with ImageMagick, as the patent only applies to the compression routines with "regular" GIFs. As a result, you can use GIF with ImageMagick, but the GIFs it creates are rather big in size.
My suggestion is: if you're using static GIFs, convert them to PNG on your client. If you're using animated GIFs, use ImageMagick to be able to add them to the db and then replace the thumbnail with the original file.

I don't think that support for GIF will be available on the very day the patent expires...
