Title: [Solved]: Upgrade or delete?
Post by: dapazman on March 16, 2008, 03:21:27 AM
Back around 2004 I got a web site through Go Daddy and they provided a simple download for CopperMine.  I'm now experiencing some problems/slowness. In order to get the most recent version, can I just save my photo folders (move them out of CopperMine directory), delete everything else, then do a new install with the latest version?  Or should I try to upgrade through, what I expect is, several versions. I need simplicity.

Thanks

Usually, you can just perform an upgrade as suggested in the docs. However, goDaddy is notorious for providing a crippled version of coppermine that you can't upgrade nor move somewhere else. Try performing a backup of your files and of your database first. If this fails, you're stuck. You shouldn't have used the crappy auto-installer in the first place. But I guess that this piece of information is little relief.

Thanks, I'll read up on the upgrade and give it a try.

Just a FYI follow up.  I decided to download the new version. I deleted, actually renamed, the cpg folders, did a fresh install of the latest version (from this site, GoDaddy has an older version) then recreated my albums.  This won't work next time 'cuz I'm using more features and many more photos. but I'm good for now.
      Thanks for the help.

That's not the recommended method. In fact, you did quite the opposite of what you're supposed to do. If this still works for you, that's fine. But I'm posting this for the benefit of others with similar issues: what you did is not the right way to upgrade.
