ummm. i'm new here so i have no idea where this is supposed to go.

anywho. can you point me to a link that tells you how to customize or make your own theme?

take a look on the themes that come with coppermine - they should give you an idea what to look for - see http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/demo/docs/index.htm#creating

There is actually no step-by-step guide.

With cpg1.3.0 there comes a theme called "styleguide" that will show you what css class is used to render which part of the screen output.
